We develop detailed metal structures (KMD) with precise calculations and elaboration of components, ensuring error-free manufacturing, quick installation and reliable operation of structures on site.
We carry out design and calculation of detailed metal structures (KMD) for buildings and structures for various purposes. We develop working drawings, connections, specifications and installation diagrams taking into account manufacturing and assembly technology. Properly executed detailed metal structures reduce production and installation time, reducing the risk of errors on the construction site.
Why, without a properly designed KMD, does a construction company lose money even before installation begins?
Section KM as part of DD gives the examination what it needs - a design concept, calculations and layout. But KM is not enough for the manufacturer: production starts only according to detailed drawings. Vague or incomplete KMD are production requests and clarifications, shipment delays, installation errors and overexpenditure of rolled metal due to incorrect blank lengths. AYU-Project develops KMD - metal detailing structures - with precise elaboration of each sending element, each connection point and each specification item so that the documentation is ready for immediate launch into production without a single production request.
What is KMD and how is this documentation different from KM?
KMD is stage WD, developed on the basis of the approved section KM and intended directly for the manufacture of metal structures at the factory and their subsequent installation at the construction site. If KM presents the structural diagram of the building in a generalized form - with the layout, grades of elements and calculation justifications - then KMD details each starting element to the level at which the plant can produce it without any additional engineering solutions: with the exact dimensions of all parts, the location of holes and millings, norms of fillet welds, classes and diameters of fasteners, markings and assembly order. The fundamental difference between the two sections is formulated briefly: KM - for examination, KMD - for production and installation.
Full composition of KMD: what AYU-Project is developing
The KMD set in AYU-Project is developed in full compliance with GOST 21.502-2016 and covers all documents necessary for production and installation:
- General data sheet - list of drawings, technical instructions for manufacturing and installation, requirements for materials, welding, anti-corrosion protection and fire protection;
- Wiring diagrams - plans and sections with the arrangement of all shipping marks, installation marks and axial references; installation sequence if necessary;
- Assembly drawings of shipping marks - detailed drawings of each factory element: geometry of all parts, location and diameters of holes, milling, designations of factory welds with legs and lengths, markings of component parts;
- Assembly connection units - detailed image of installation joints using high-strength bolts or field welding, indicating all connection parameters;
- List of shipping stamps - a consolidated list of all assembly units of the project with designations, weight and quantity; used when shipping structures from the factory;
- Specification of hardware - a complete list of fasteners with strength classes, standards and quantities for each type of connection;
- List of metal (selection of rolled metal) - a systematic list of profiles, sheets and pipes with steel grade, cross-section, length and design weight; basis for ordering rolled metal products.
How are the connection nodes included in KMD developed?
Connection nodes are the most labor-intensive and critically important part of KMD; it is in them that the main zone of production errors and construction requests is concentrated. AYU-Project develops node solutions in three steps. First, the connection is calculated - the selection of a bolt group or weld according to its load-bearing capacity under standard and special load combinations. Then a design solution for the assembly is developed, taking into account construction tolerances, the possibility of installation adjustment and requirements for the assembly sequence. Finally, a detailed drawing of the assembly is drawn up with all dimensions, holes, chamfers and seam markings - suitable for direct production without additional requests. Each unit is internally tested before being included in the KMD kit.
For which facilities are we developing KMD?
AYU-Project develops CMD for objects of a wide range of purposes and design types:
- Industrial and warehouse buildings - single-span and multi-span frames with or without crane equipment; lightweight fencing systems on cold-formed profiles;
- Administrative and commercial buildings - multi-storey steel frames with complex architectural solutions, balcony consoles and non-standard interfaces;
- Technological overpasses and galleries - above-ground pipeline racks, transitional pedestrian galleries, service areas;
- Energy facilities - portals of open switchgears, structures of transformer substations, cable racks;
- Long-span coatings - steel trusses and spatial structures for sports, cultural and transport facilities;
- Reconstruction and strengthening - KMD for new load-bearing elements during the technical re-equipment of existing production facilities, including units adjacent to existing structures.
What standards govern the development of KMD drawings?
The design and composition of KMD are regulated by a strict regulatory framework - and deviation from it entails production requests, delays and additional approvals. AYU-Project develops documentation in full accordance with current editions:
- GOST 21.502-2016 “Rules for the execution of working documentation for metal and wooden structures” - the main document regulating the composition, design, marking and specifications in KMD;
- SP 16.13330.2017 “Steel structures” - a calculation basis for checking joints during the development of structural design;
- SP 294.1325800.2017 “Steel structures. Design rules" - requirements for the design of connections and elements;
- GOST 23118-2012 “Building steel structures” - technical requirements for manufacturing; taken into account when developing technical instructions in the general data sheet;
- GOST 5264, GOST 14771, GOST 11534 - standards for manual arc, semi-automatic and argon arc welding; used when marking seams in drawings KMD.
Updating the regulatory framework in AYU-Project is an ongoing process, and not a one-time task before the delivery of a specific object.
How is the development process of KMD structured in AYU-Project?
The development of KMD is a sequential process with clear control points that eliminate the accumulation of errors from stage to stage.
Stage 1 - Obtaining and analyzing initial data. We study the approved set of CM, technical specifications for the development of CM, information about the technological capabilities of the manufacturer, the steel grades used and the standard sizes of rolled products available in production.
Stage 2 - Development of installation diagrams. We work out the placement of shipping marks, installation marks and references, the installation sequence - the basis on which all detail drawings are built.
Stage 3 - Detailing of shipping stamps. We develop assembly drawings of each shipping element: we determine the component parts, their geometry, hole location, factory seams and markings.
Stage 4 - Development of assembly units. We carry out calculations and detailing of all installation connections - bolted and welded joints, column bases, support units of trusses and beams.
Stage 5 - Preparation of specifications and statements. We compile a list of shipping grades, a specification of hardware and a list of rolled metal products with the exact quantity and weight of each item.
Stage 6 - Internal review and release. The entire set of KMD undergoes internal testing for compliance with KM, regulatory requirements and technological capabilities of the plant before being transferred to the client.
Why do construction companies trust AYU-Project to develop KMD?
For the construction business, KMD is documentation, the accuracy of which directly determines the uninterrupted installation. One incorrect detail in the assembly drawing stops not only the installation of a specific unit, but also the entire adjacent chain of work.
- High detail accuracy - each element and node undergoes a multi-level check; production requests from the manufacturer and installation issues on site are kept to a minimum;
- Development of components taking into account production technology - design solutions of units are consistent with the actual capabilities of the plant: types of welding equipment used, permissible manufacturing tolerances and assembly procedures;
- Full consistency between KM and KMD - when developing both sections within one team, discrepancies between design and detail solutions that inevitably arise when different subcontractors work are eliminated;
- Installation diagrams that eliminate errors on site - the documentation is developed so that the installer can carry out the assembly based solely on the design drawings, without additional consultations with the designer;
- Subcontracting across Russia - we accept initial data in electronic form, physical presence is not required; 8+ years of experience and confirmed qualifications: SRO, specialists in the NOPRIZ registry.
What is the time frame for developing KMD and what does the cost depend on?
The cost of KMD development depends on the number of fabrication marks, the complexity of connection details, the volume of non-standard connections, and whether the documentation is developed from scratch or from another designer’s completed KM package. Indicative schedules for facilities of medium complexity are 3-6 weeks for industrial and warehouse buildings with a standard structural layout and 6-12 weeks for complex multi-storey frames or projects with long-span trusses. Send us the KM package or design brief for an accurate cost and schedule estimate; the project manager will contact you within one business day.

Frequently Asked Questions
The development of KMD as detailed documentation for production does not technically require SRO approval, unlike KM design documentation. However, if design documentation is developed as part of working documentation under a design contract, the presence of an SRO is a prerequisite. AYU-Project is a member of the SRO, specialists are registered in the NOPRIZ register.
AYU-Project undertakes shop drawing (KMD) packages for facilities of any scale, from a small process site with several dozen assembly marks to a major industrial complex containing thousands of elements. Engagement terms, including the minimum scope of work, are agreed individually during approval of the Terms of Reference.
We develop KMD fabrication drawings both in a 3D environment (Tekla Structures) and in 2D formats. 3D detailing is preferable for complex facilities: it allows you to automatically generate specifications, eliminates collisions and generates files for CNC.
The main regulatory document is GOST 21.502-2016 “Rules for the execution of working documentation for metal structures.” GOST 23118-2012 “Steel building structures” is also used. General technical conditions", SP 16.13330.2017, SP 294.1325800.2017, GOST 5264, GOST 14771, GOST 11534 (standards for welds).
Yes, and this is one of the most technically difficult types of work. When developing KMD for reinforcement, geometric deviations of existing structures, restrictions on welding methods and positions, the sequence of dismantling and installation work under load, and requirements for minimizing the amount of work in existing production conditions are taken into account.
Upon separate request, NC/DSTV files with parts for cutting on plasma or laser CNC machines can be provided as part of the KMD. This is relevant for factories with a high level of automation, where manual marking is replaced by programming machines using electronic files. The conditions are negotiated at the stage of approval of the technical specifications.
If you have information about a specific manufacturer, we strongly recommend it and do this as part of the standard workflow. Coordination of technical production capabilities at the development stage of KMD fabrication drawings eliminates the situation when a documented correct solution is physically impossible to implement on specific equipment. If a plant has not yet been selected, KMD fabrication drawings are developed according to standard production requirements GOST 23118-2012.
Yes, this is standard practice. We receive an approved KM structural steel design kit, if necessary, request calculation models or additional data, agree on the scope of KMD fabrication drawings with the client and develop a complete detail kit. When the KM package contains solutions that require clarification, we notify the client and liaise with the original KM designer.
KM structural steel design is a section of design documentation for examination: structural concept, calculation justifications and layout diagrams in a generalized form. KMD fabrication drawings is a section of detailed design documentation for production and installation: each sending element is detailed to a level sufficient for manufacturing at the factory without additional engineering solutions. At most sites, both sections are required: KM structural steel design - for obtaining a construction permit, KMD fabrication drawings - for ordering and manufacturing metal structures.
