AYU-Project delivered a major upgrade of the underground communication network for Kola MMC JSC, one of Nornickel’s key enterprises. The design and working documentation covered 120 km of fiber-optic communication lines and the installation of 79 explosion-proof switches in the Severny Mine, making this one of the company’s most technically complex industrial communications projects.
Client
The customer of the project was Kola MMC JSC, part of the Norilsk Nickel group of companies, one of the world's largest producers of nickel and platinum group metals. The enterprise is located in the Murmansk region, in the city of Monchegorsk, on the territory of the KMMC industrial site.
Facility
The design object was the underground backbone data transmission network of the Severny mine at the Zapolyarny site - an active mine with an extensive system of tunnels and shafts, where ore is mined at several levels.
Scope of design work
AYU-Project engineers developed design and working documentation for the organization of an underground core data transmission network, including routing and laying 120 km of fiber-optic communication line directly in the mine shaft. Since underground workings belong to explosive zones due to the possible accumulation of firedamp and dust, the project provides for the installation of 79 explosion-proof switches - a solution that completely eliminates the risk of sparking during normal operation of the network. This approach provides the enterprise with reliable and secure transmission of data from communication, dispatching and safety systems for the entire life of the mine.
